Attorney-General (A-G), Dr. Dominic Ayine, has disclosed that the former Director-General of the National Service Authority (NSA) and other senior officials paid a Member of Parliament (MP) to prevent the publication of the ghost names scandal.
In a press conference on Monday, March 24, 2025, Dr. Ayine revealed that his office had gathered evidence of financial misconduct after questioning eight individuals involved in the scheme. He stated that these interrogations revealed payments made to vendors and individuals in an attempt to cover up the alleged corruption.
“Regarding the National Service scandal, eight suspects have been questioned, and many of them have begun to cooperate. We now have evidence of payments made into the accounts of top NSA executives by private vendors and staff of the scheme,” Dr. Ayine said.
He further revealed that in November 2024, the CEO of the National Service Scheme and other officials paid a Ghanaian MP to suppress the story in the media and protect them from scrutiny.
“This is still an unfolding story, and more details will emerge soon,” he added.
The Attorney-General also reassured the public that investigations into the case were progressing smoothly and would be concluded by April 2025.
This announcement follows the government's revelation of a significant discrepancy in the National Service payroll, uncovering 81,885 suspected ghost names. This figure reflects the difference between the actual number of active personnel and the payroll data submitted by the previous NSA management.
The findings show that there are currently 98,145 active service personnel, in stark contrast to the 180,030 names presented for allowance payments in 2024.
