Students of Sokode Senior High Technical School have yet to return to classes, despite an official resumption date of March 20, following the recent closure of the school due to a violent clash.
The Ghana Education Service (GES) in the Volta Region had ordered the indefinite closure of the school on February 23, 2025, after violent confrontations between students and residents of the Sokode community. The altercation, which began on Saturday, February 22, arose from unresolved tensions and resulted in injuries on both sides. Among the injured was a journalist from Ho-based Swiss FM, who sustained severe injuries while covering the incident.
During a visit by Citi News, school staff were present, but no students had reported back to school. The school’s management informed Citi News that a meeting is scheduled for Monday, March 24, 2025, with parents and key stakeholders to address the aftermath of the incident.
In the meantime, the school’s management has assured parents that the school environment is now safe for teaching and learning, as per the directive from the regional minister.
