Alexandra Hildebrandt, a 66-year-old German woman, has garnered widespread attention after giving birth to her 10th child, Philipp, on March 19. The birth took place at Charité Hospital in Berlin, where Philipp was delivered via cesarean section. Weighing 7 pounds, 13 ounces at birth, the baby is reportedly in good health. Hildebrandt shared details of the birth in an interview with TODAY.com on March 26.
Expanding a Growing Family
Hildebrandt, who is a well-known public figure and the manager of the Wall Museum at Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin, described Philipp as the perfect addition to her large and diverse family. Her children, ranging in age from 2 to 46, now include the newborn.
"A big family is not only a wonderful experience, but it's also crucial for raising children properly," she shared in an email. Despite her advanced age, Hildebrandt emphasizes that her pregnancy occurred naturally, without the aid of fertility treatments. She attributes her successful pregnancy to her healthy lifestyle, which includes a nutritious diet, daily swimming, and long walks.
Medical Insights
Dr. Wolfgang Henrich, Hildebrandt's doctor, confirmed that her pregnancy was uncomplicated, despite her history of eight previous C-sections. He noted, however, that pregnancies at an older age typically come with increased risks, such as high blood pressure, premature birth, and cardiovascular complications. Nonetheless, Hildebrandt’s pregnancy remained largely uneventful.
Challenging Age Norms in Motherhood
Hildebrandt's story adds to a growing trend of late-age motherhood. In November 2023, 70-year-old Ugandan woman Safina Namukwaya gave birth to twins via IVF, following the birth of a daughter in 2020. While pregnancies in older women are still rare, they are increasingly possible. According to a 2019 report by Healthline, pregnancy is possible for any woman with a normal uterus, regardless of age, as confirmed by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine.
Despite the public curiosity about her age, Hildebrandt has received nothing but positive feedback from her loved ones. “I have only received positive feedback,” she told TODAY.com.
Her story adds to the growing number of women defying conventional expectations around motherhood, showcasing how modern advancements are enabling women to challenge traditional boundaries in parenting and pregnancy.
