Asem Aba: Concerns Raised Over Age and Tenure of New Inspector General of Police The Minority Leader and
Member of Parliament for Effutu, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has expressed concerns regarding the age and length of service of the newly appointed Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno.
Speaking in Parliament on March 18, 2025, Afenyo-Markin referred to an official statement revealing that IGP Yohuno has served in the Ghana Police Service for 40 years. With a reported age of 60, he raised questions about the age at which Yohuno joined the service, suggesting that this matter warrants closer examination.
Christian Tetteh Yohuno was appointed as IGP on March 13, 2025, succeeding Dr. George Akuffo Dampare. His appointment has sparked debates concerning the length of his service and the potential impact on his tenure.
Afenyo-Markin stated that the Minority intends to conduct further inquiries to ensure full transparency and compliance with public service regulations. "The Minister, in his address, took the opportunity to introduce the new IGP. I want to congratulate him on his appointment. However, according to the statement from the Minister responsible for Government Communications, it was noted that the new IGP has spent 40 years in service. Forty years as a police officer, so we will calculate, at the right time, whether he joined at age 20, 19, or even 18—taking his age into account," Afenyo-Markin remarked.
He added, "That is just a side note, but I wish him well. I am merely doing the math to consider whether the IGP might retire soon. However, Mr. Speaker, that’s beside the point."
This statement reflects the Minority's intention to scrutinize the matter further to ensure proper adherence to regulations and ensure transparency in public appointments.
