The staff and management of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo) have raised red banners in protest against what they claim to be politically motivated appointments within their Corporate Communications Office in Tamale.
This protest comes in response to reports that two communication officers from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) have been appointed to prominent roles in the corporate communications departments of both NEDCo and the Volta River Authority (VRA). The move has ignited strong opposition among the staff of both institutions.
The leadership of staff groups at both NEDCo and VRA has vehemently opposed these alleged appointments, expressing concerns that such moves could undermine the professionalism and operational integrity of the organizations.
In an interview with Citi News on Friday, March 21, William K. Asare, Chairman of the Senior Staff Association-NEDCo, called the appointments a "recipe for disaster" and urged the authorities to reconsider their decision. He emphasized that, historically, managerial positions have never been filled through political influence.
"Asserting that appointments for managerial positions have never come from the office of the president is crucial," Asare remarked. "If this is allowed to stand, we may soon find individuals being appointed to manage other sectors, like transport, based solely on political allegiance."
Asare also stated that the staff would be addressing the issue with the minister next week, warning that if a favorable resolution is not reached, they would take a stronger stance. "We are prepared to take action and communicate in a way that politicians understand if necessary," he added.
