The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has praised the Ghana Police Service for the arrest of a suspect in connection with the 2019 murder of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale. The suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, was brought before the Madina District Court on Wednesday, March 19, 2025, where he was remanded into police custody. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 1, 2025.
In a statement, the GJA confirmed that it has been in communication with senior police officials regarding updates on the arrest and prosecution process. The association extended its gratitude to the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yohuno and the Director-General of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), DCOP Lydia Yaako Donkor, for their dedication to advancing the case.
This arrest represents a significant step forward in the pursuit of justice for Ahmed Suale, whose murder on January 16, 2019, has remained unsolved for over six years. The GJA acknowledged that this development is the result of persistent advocacy by the association, which has relentlessly campaigned for action on the case.
While welcoming the arrest, the GJA urged the Police to continue their efforts in apprehending other individuals involved in the murder. "We hope this breakthrough with Daniel Owusu Koranteng’s arrest marks the beginning of a broader search for justice for Ahmed Suale," the GJA said. "It is a vital step towards justice and provides hope for media freedom advocates both in Ghana and internationally."
The GJA also highlighted the impact of the unresolved case on Ghana’s ranking in the World Press Freedom Index and reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring justice is served. The association is closely monitoring the case’s progression and has previously issued an ultimatum to take the matter to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Community Court of Justice if no significant progress is made by the end of March 2025.
"In the coming days, we will engage with police leadership for more details on the prosecution of the suspect and the ongoing investigation. Should there be insufficient progress, we will pursue action at the ECOWAS Community Court of Justice," the GJA stated.
The association also called for updates on other unresolved cases of assaults on journalists, including the case of Latif Iddrisu, which the GJA plans to submit to the ECOWAS Court.
Meanwhile, the GJA has informed its international partners, including the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ) and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), about the arrest and ongoing prosecution of the suspect. Both organizations have pledged to continue advocating for justice on international platforms.
The GJA remains resolute in its pursuit of justice for Ahmed Suale, emphasizing that this arrest is only the first step toward holding accountable those responsible for crimes against journalists in Ghana.
