Surgical operations at Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) in Kumasi, located in the Ashanti Region, have been temporarily suspended due to a severe water shortage affecting the facility. Hospital officials confirmed that the water supply issue, which has persisted since last week, has compromised the safety of surgical procedures and severely impacted the delivery of essential healthcare services.
On March 25, the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association issued a memo to hospital management, urging immediate adherence to the suspension for the safety and well-being of patients. The memo emphasized the critical role of water in maintaining hygiene, conducting surgeries, and supporting overall patient care. With the current shortage, these essential functions could no longer be guaranteed, prompting the difficult decision to halt all surgical cases.
The memo stated, “This is to formally notify management of the decision taken by the Orthopaedic and Emergency Directorate to suspend the admission of new patients until the water supply issue is resolved.”
Despite ongoing efforts to manage the crisis, the memo highlighted that the situation has reached a critical level, significantly compromising patient safety and the hospital's ability to provide effective healthcare.
Dr. Michael Leat, Chairman of the Komfo Anokye Doctors Association, expressed regret on behalf of his colleagues for any inconvenience caused by the suspension, assuring that efforts to care for existing patients would continue. Additionally, the association urged hospital management to explore alternative water supply sources and to provide regular updates regarding the status of the water supply.
