Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, the Member of Parliament for Assin South, has attributed the New Patriotic Party's (NPP) loss of the Assin Central parliamentary seat to the absence of Kennedy Agyapong in the race. Speaking in an interview with Umaru Sanda Amadu on Face to Face on Channel One TV, Fordjour emphasized Agyapong's significant influence and past electoral victories in the constituency.
Fordjour noted that despite the challenges Agyapong faced in the last two elections, where his support base had dwindled, the MP had a unique ability to connect with the people. “Kennedy is Kennedy; he has a way of engaging the electorate and ensuring their support. Even though the numbers were declining in recent elections, his presence always made a difference,” Fordjour stated.
He also highlighted that Agyapong's withdrawal from the 2024 parliamentary race to focus on the party's presidential primaries had contributed to the party’s unexpected defeat. “Kennedy has made significant contributions to Assin Central, and despite potential voter apathy, his influence could still have held the seat,” he said.
Reflecting on the NPP’s loss, Fordjour lamented, “Assin Central has been a stronghold for us, and we were optimistic about retaining it. Unfortunately, the outcome was not in our favor.”
Agyapong, who had been a consistent victor in Assin Central, chose not to run for re-election in 2024, a decision Fordjour believes was a pivotal factor in the constituency's loss to the opposition.
