Francis Asenso-Boakye, Member of Parliament for Bantama and former Minister for Roads and Highways, has rejected the proposal to construct an airport in Cape Coast, suggesting that investing in road infrastructure would offer more significant benefits to Ghana’s economy.
During a parliamentary debate on the approval of a GHS 3.2 billion budget for the Ministry of Roads and Highways, Asenso-Boakye argued that a modern highway connecting Accra to Takoradi could drastically improve travel times, enabling the journey to be completed in just an hour and a half. He highlighted that this infrastructure upgrade would revolutionize tourism in the country.
Asenso-Boakye questioned the feasibility of building an airport in Cape Coast, a project initially promised by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2020 elections. The proposal has been met with skepticism from analysts, who point out the lack of economic justification for such an investment.
Instead of focusing resources on the airport, the former Minister emphasized the long-term benefits of investing in concrete roads. He noted that concrete roads, which have a lifespan of up to 50 years, would prove to be more cost-effective in the long run compared to the current asphalt roads, which need to be resurfaced every 15 years.
Asenso-Boakye’s stance underscores the importance of prioritizing sustainable infrastructure that delivers lasting value to the nation.
