Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has confirmed that he will contest the 2027 presidential election, firmly ruling out any possibility of serving as a vice-presidential candidate.
Obi made the declaration on Sunday night during an interactive session on X Spaces, where he responded to questions about his political future and leadership aspirations. He stated unequivocally that his ambition is focused solely on the presidency and not on becoming a running mate to any candidate.
Addressing speculation about potential alliances and vice-presidential considerations, Obi explained that his political journey, experience, and preparation are aimed at leading the country from the highest office. He stressed that he has accumulated sufficient leadership and governance experience over the years and sees no reason to step down from his presidential ambition.
His remarks have generated widespread discussion within Nigeria’s political landscape, particularly among Labour Party supporters and the youth-driven movements that played a significant role in his 2023 presidential campaign.
With the 2027 general election drawing closer, political activities and positioning are expected to intensify across party lines.
Speaking during the discussion, Obi said:
“I am not travelling around the world to learn governance in order to become a vice president.
I know how to turn Nigeria around. I built my business from scratch and have more experience than any candidate, including the sitting president.
Peter Obi will be on the ballot in 2027. I need your support, and I need your prayers.”
As preparations for the next general election continue, Obi’s declaration signals his determination to remain a central figure in the 2027 presidential race.
