“My Husband Couldn’t Stop Crying”: Woman Shares Emotional Account of Bride Price Return

A Nigerian woman has shared a deeply emotional account of the formal dissolution of her marriage, nearly two years after she separated from her husband.

In a video posted on TikTok, the woman, identified as @miss.ijay, explained that the marriage was officially brought to an end following the return of her bride price to her former husband’s family. In many Nigerian cultures, the return of a bride price signifies the complete and final termination of a marital union.

The woman accompanied her story with a throwback video recorded on the day the bride price was returned, describing it as the moment the marriage truly ended—seven years after it was first initiated.

According to her, the process initially appeared calm and orderly. However, the atmosphere changed as the reality of the separation set in for her former husband. She revealed that he became overwhelmed with emotion and reportedly broke down in tears during the proceedings when it became clear that the marriage was irreversibly over.

Despite the emotional scene, the woman stated that her decision to leave the marriage had been made long before that day. She explained that the event did not create doubt or hesitation but instead confirmed that the chapter of her life had been permanently closed.

Reflecting on the experience, she said:

“My bride price was paid in December 2016. My bride price was returned in December 2023. This video was made on the day my bride price was returned. My ‘husband’ couldn’t stop crying. That was when it truly dawned on him that I was really walking away from the marriage.”

Her story has since sparked conversations online about marriage, separation, and the emotional weight of traditional customs in modern relationships.
