Nigerian singer Omawumi has shared her perspective on motherhood, marriage, and personal boundaries, stressing that women should not feel pressured into marriage simply because they are pregnant.
Speaking candidly about her personal experience, the award-winning artist revealed that she became pregnant just a few months into her relationship with her husband. Despite pressure from family, she chose not to rush into marriage, explaining that they were still getting to know each other at the time.
“We didn’t really know each other,” she said. “So I said, let’s take our time. If marriage will happen, it will happen.”
Omawumi emphasised that deciding to have a child and deciding to marry are two distinct choices that should be made independently.
“To keep the baby is a different decision. To marry the man is a different decision,” she stated.
The singer also reflected on how motherhood transformed her personality, noting that she became more sensitive to the feelings of others, sometimes at the expense of her own needs.
“I became softer and more concerned about people’s feelings,” she said. “But I later asked myself, what do I want?”
According to her, learning to assert herself and prioritise her own wellbeing was essential, even if it meant being misunderstood.
“Sometimes selflessness makes you become someone you don’t like,” she explained. “You are not being selfish; you’re being self-full.”
Omawumi encouraged young women to avoid societal pressure and only consider marriage when they feel personally ready.
“If you’re not ready to marry, don’t marry,” she advised.
