Operations at the Amasaman China Mall have been suspended after part of the building collapsed, resulting in injuries to two individuals and damage to merchandise within the facility.
The incident occurred on Sunday, December 28, 2025, prompting an immediate response from the Ga West Municipal Assembly. The injured victims were rushed for medical attention and are currently reported to be in stable condition.
Speaking on the development, the Ga West Municipal Chief Executive, John Desmond Sowah Nai, said early investigations suggest the collapse was caused by weaknesses in the building’s structure. He explained that the Municipal Security Coordinating Council (MUSEC) has ordered the temporary closure of the mall until all identified safety concerns are properly addressed.
According to the MCE, the mall will remain closed until further notice, as authorities work with the management to implement all required safety measures to prevent a recurrence.
China Malls have become popular in many parts of Ghana due to their wide range of low-cost products. However, recent incidents have raised questions about safety standards at some of these facilities.
In a related development earlier this year, construction of a China Mall project in Koforidua was halted by the Eastern Regional Minister over concerns that the site was located in a flood-prone area. The decision followed complaints from residents and calls for a comprehensive environmental impact assessment.
Additionally, past incidents such as the fire that destroyed the China City Mall in Kumasi and flooding at the Ashaiman China Mall have further highlighted the need for stricter enforcement of building and safety regulations.
Local authorities have assured the public that thorough inspections will be conducted and that the Amasaman China Mall will only be reopened once it is deemed safe for traders and customers alike.
