Atiku Abubakar Denies Reports of Stepping Down for Peter Obi Ahead of 2027 Election

Former Vice President of Nigeria, Atiku Abubakar, has dismissed claims suggesting that he has withdrawn from the 2027 presidential race in favour of former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi.

Recent reports alleged that Atiku, who was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) flagbearer in the 2023 presidential election, had agreed to step aside for Obi and support a one-term presidency in the interest of regional balance. The reports further claimed that such an arrangement was part of ongoing political negotiations ahead of the 2027 general election.

However, Atiku’s media adviser, Paul Ibe, has categorically described the claims as false and misleading. Reacting on Saturday, December 27, Ibe shared a screenshot of the report on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account and dismissed it succinctly, stating: “Fake news: Not on the menu!”

The denial has sparked renewed debate on social media, with supporters of both Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi speculating about possible alliances, strategies, and permutations ahead of the next presidential contest.

The development also comes amid reports that Peter Obi may be planning to formally join the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a move that has further fueled political speculation as 2027 approaches.

Although the next general election is still some time away, political maneuvering appears to be intensifying. For now, Atiku Abubakar has made it clear that he has no intention of stepping down for any candidate in the 2027 presidential race.
