Three Armed Robbery Suspects Killed in Ashanti Region Shootout, High-Powered Firearms Seized

Three suspected members of an armed robbery syndicate were killed during a police operation near Anwiankwanta in the Ashanti Region. The operation unfolded after law enforcement intercepted what authorities described as preparations for a highway robbery attack.

According to the Ashanti South Regional Police Command, the operation was the result of intelligence indicating that the gang had been involved in several violent robberies and murders across the areas of Manso, Jacobu, Anwiankwanta, and surrounding regions.

On December 24, 2025, police officers moved in on the suspects, who were positioning themselves along the Anwiankwanta–Obuasi Highway. Officers were deployed in both marked and unmarked vehicles to a bush area near Anwiankwanta, where they spotted five armed men.

Upon contact, the suspects opened fire and attempted to flee into the bush. In response, the police returned fire, resulting in three suspects sustaining fatal gunshot wounds. Two other suspects managed to escape the scene.

Recovered from the scene were two pump-action shotguns, an unmarked pistol, 25 live cartridges, and six spent rounds of ammunition.

The deceased suspects were identified as Seidu Issah, 29, Musah Yakubu, 35, and Yahaya Munkaila, 25, also known as Tijani. They were transported to the Bekwai Municipal Hospital, where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

Police investigations revealed that the suspects had confessed to being involved in multiple robberies, including the November 3, 2025, attack at Jacobu Airport, where a security guard was killed. They were also linked to highway robberies along the Manso stretch, an incident at Antoakrom, a robbery at Abofour Forest near Offinso in May, and an attack on a gold buyer at Anwiankwanta earlier in December.

Further intelligence gathered from the suspects led to a follow-up search on December 26, 2025, in a palm plantation near Manso Nkwanta. During this search, officers discovered a concealed trench containing high-powered firearms, including an AK-47 rifle, an MG.3 rifle, a pump-action shotgun, and a single-barrel firearm. Additional items, such as clothing and footwear linked to the gang, were also recovered.

The operation highlights the ongoing efforts by the police to combat armed robbery in the Ashanti Region and bring criminals to justice.
