Widow of Slain Police Sergeant Appears in Court on Murder Charge

The widow of a South African police officer has appeared in court in connection with the death of her husband.

Mokheseng Nqxulelo, 32, is accused of killing her husband, a sergeant attached to the Protection and Security Services (PSS). She briefly appeared before the Aliwal North Magistrate’s Court on December 23, 2025, according to Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani.

Nqxulelo was remanded in custody and transferred to the Khayelitsha Magistrate’s Court, where she was scheduled to make her next appearance on December 29, 2025. She faces a charge of murder.

Hani confirmed that the deceased police officer was shot and killed at his home in Harare. Nqxulelo’s court appearance followed her re-arrest in Jamestown, Eastern Cape, by members of the Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation unit.

Providing background to the case, Hani explained that the incident dates back to February 2023, when the couple reportedly had a domestic altercation. Family members were initially present but later left due to the continuous arguments.

According to Nqxulelo’s account, her husband retrieved his official firearm during the altercation. She claimed she believed he intended to shoot her, but instead handed her the weapon and instructed her to fire a few rounds to vent her anger. She allegedly discharged several shots into the lounge wall and later realised that her husband was lying on the floor.

Hani said Nqxulelo then sought help from a neighbour. The injured officer was rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The case was initially set to go to trial in June 2025 but was withdrawn after a key witness could not be located. Following further consultations with the Director of Public Prosecutions, the matter was reviewed, and a decision was taken to reinstate the charges. A warrant of arrest was subsequently issued, leading to Nqxulelo’s re-arrest.

Investigations are ongoing as the legal process continues.
