Afrobeat star Seun Kuti has openly shared his views on prayer, revealing that he has never engaged in it and does not believe in its efficacy.
In a video shared on his Instagram account, Kuti described prayer as “childish,” asserting that personal choices and actions, rather than prayer, define an individual’s life.
“I have never prayed before in my life. I don’t know how to pray. I don’t believe it works. Your life is your prayer. Praying in public or aloud is mere eye service; it is childishness,” he said.
He further explained that the true measure of prayer lies in one’s actions. “Your life is the prayer. What you do with your life is your prayer. That is the only prayer. Your actions are your prayer,” Kuti emphasized.
Addressing conventional beliefs about God, he argued that most prayers are ineffective because they must align with a predetermined divine plan. “If your prayer does not align with the will of your God, then your prayer will not be answered. Clerics often omit this because they wish to exploit people,” he added.
Kuti concluded by noting that he addresses challenges through personal effort rather than prayer. “I solve my problems; I don’t pray over them. If prayer solved problems, prisons and hospitals would be empty,” he remarked.
