Former Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Inusah Fuseini, has raised strong objections to proposals seeking to extend Ghana’s presidential term from four to five years, arguing that recent governance experiences demonstrate the adequacy of the current term length.
Speaking on *Newsfile* on JoyNews on Saturday, Mr. Fuseini said he remains unconvinced that there is any compelling justification for altering the duration of the presidency.
“I have reservations. My first reservation is that I am not entirely convinced that we need to extend the term of the presidency,” he stated.
He noted that the debate over extending presidential terms is not new, recalling that it first entered national discourse on January 5, 2009, when then-President John Agyekum Kufuor delivered his final State of the Nation Address to Parliament.
According to Mr. Fuseini, President Kufuor referenced examples from parts of Asia, particularly Singapore and Malaysia, suggesting that longer periods in office had contributed to their growth and development.
However, Mr. Fuseini argued that former President John Dramani Mahama’s governance experience has clearly demonstrated that meaningful progress can be achieved within Ghana’s existing four-year term.
“He has shown that you can set up your government in less than three months and get it fully operational,” Mr. Fuseini observed.
He further emphasized that significant achievements can be made early in a presidential tenure, noting that “you can achieve substantial success within the first year of government.”
Mr. Fuseini maintained that these realities weaken arguments in favor of extending the presidential term, insisting that Ghana’s four-year cycle remains sufficient for effective leadership, accountability, and performance assessment.
“That goes to dispel what President Kufuor said in 2009,” he concluded, reaffirming his support for retaining the current constitutional arrangement.
