The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has hinted at plans to retire from Parliament after years of public service, indicating that preparations are underway to ensure a smooth leadership transition within the constituency.
Speaking at an end-of-year event in North Tongu, the MP—who also serves as Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs—said he is deliberately investing in the education and development of young people to prepare them for future leadership roles. According to him, these efforts are aimed at producing professionals and leaders who will eventually take over the mantle of representation.
“We are producing engineers, lawyers, aeronautical engineers, and future Members of Parliament who will take over from me because I will be retiring soon,” Mr. Ablakwa stated, encouraging constituents with political ambitions to begin preparing themselves for leadership.
He urged beneficiaries of his educational sponsorship initiatives to remain disciplined, focused, and committed to excellence. Mr. Ablakwa also expressed pride in supporting a young woman from the constituency who has become the first aeronautical engineer from North Tongu. He disclosed that arrangements have been made to sponsor her postgraduate studies in the United States.
“I can confirm that one of your predecessors, the first aeronautical engineer North Tongu has produced, graduated with a first-class degree. My office will again sponsor her to the United States to pursue a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering,” he said.
The remarks were made during the North Tongu MP’s annual Christmas party, held on Sunday, December 28, 2025, at Juapong. The event attracted over 6,000 children from across the constituency. As part of the celebration, Mr. Ablakwa awarded 50 tertiary scholarships to students who are expected to resume school in January 2026.
In a Facebook post following the event, he expressed gratitude to his wife, Nuhela Seidu, his friends, and the Volta Regional Minister, James Gunu, for their consistent support.
“The North Tongu MP’s Annual Christmas Party is getting bigger, better, and more exciting. I had a great time with over 6,000 wonderful children in Juapong. I also provided 50 tertiary scholarships for students returning to school in January 2026. I am grateful to my wife, friends, and the Volta Regional Minister for their unwavering support,” he wrote.
Mr. Ablakwa’s comments sparked positive reactions on social media, with many Ghanaians commending his leadership style and commitment to education and youth development in North Tongu.
Meanwhile, the Minister for Foreign Affairs is expected to travel to Latvia as part of Ghana’s ongoing efforts to investigate the death of Ghanaian student Nana Agyei Ahyia. Ghana’s Embassy in Germany has already undertaken a fact-finding mission, following calls from the bereaved family for a thorough investigation and justice.
