Manchester United head coach, Ruben Amorim, has explained the reason behind substituting Mason Mount at halftime during the team’s 1-0 victory over Newcastle United on Boxing Day.
Mount, who had been impressive in the first half, was replaced by Jack Fletcher, the son of former Manchester United midfielder Darren Fletcher, who was in attendance to watch his son play.
Amorim told *Sky Sports* that Mount felt a slight discomfort at halftime and wanted to continue playing, but the decision was made to take him off as a precaution to prevent further injury. With several key players, including Bruno Fernandes, already sidelined due to injury, Amorim stressed the importance of avoiding additional setbacks.
“He [Mason Mount] felt something at halftime. He wanted to continue, which is a good sign,” said Amorim. “But we can't afford to lose more players. If you're not 100% fit, it’s better to make the change. Jack [Fletcher] did a very good job coming in.”
Amorim also praised the defensive performance, with Manchester United keeping a clean sheet in the match. “Clean sheet, back four — I think everything is covered. We can enjoy Boxing Day,” he added, referencing injuries to players like Kobbie Mainoo and Fernandes.
The only goal of the match was scored by Patrick Dorgu, securing the win for United against Newcastle.
