At 81, Father of University Vice-Chancellor Earns MBA from His Son’s Institution

An 81-year-old Ghanaian, Mr. Joseph Aheto, has successfully earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Entrepreneurship and Small Enterprise Development from the University of Cape Coast (UCC), demonstrating that learning has no age limit.

Mr. Aheto graduated during the 9th session of UCC’s 58th congregation held in December 2025. The ceremony was both emotional and inspiring, made even more significant by the presence of his son, Professor Denis Aheto, who currently serves as the Acting Vice-Chancellor of the university.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Aheto expressed pride and joy at the unique moment. “I feel very excited to have my own son graduating me today,” he said.

This milestone marks a continuation of Mr. Aheto’s long academic journey. He previously obtained a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the University of Ghana in 1978. Several decades later, he felt motivated to return to formal education to further broaden his knowledge and skills.

According to him, his decision to pursue postgraduate studies was inspired by the academic accomplishments of his two sons, both of whom are professors. Rather than feeling discouraged by their achievements, he saw them as motivation and enrolled in the MBA programme in 2022. He also clarified that his admission into the programme occurred before his son assumed any leadership position at UCC.

Mr. Aheto acknowledged that his return to the classroom was not without challenges. He recalled facing skepticism and mockery from some younger students who questioned why someone of his age would still pursue higher education. Despite these challenges, he remained focused and determined.

“That did not deter me. I persevered, and today I have graduated,” he said confidently.

His achievement has been widely praised as a powerful reminder that determination, resilience, and a passion for learning can overcome age-related barriers and inspire generations.
