Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has emphasized that leadership by example is crucial in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
The former governor of Anambra State made this statement while engaging with Nigerians during an interactive session on X Space (formerly Twitter) on Sunday. According to Obi, Nigeria’s security situation continues to worsen, requiring leaders who demonstrate discipline, responsibility, and accountability in both words and actions.
### Leadership by Example: A Personal Experience
In response to questions about how he would tackle Nigeria’s security issues, Obi shared a personal story to illustrate his leadership philosophy. He recalled an incident during his time as governor when he was traveling on a British Airways flight. The aircraft’s toilet was in a deplorable state, and when a woman who worked with the Lagos State Government under former governor Babatunde Fashola opened the door and saw the condition, she walked away in disgust.
Obi, however, decided to act. He went into the toilet, cleaned it himself, and did not inform anyone of his actions. When the woman returned, she was surprised to see the toilet had been cleaned. She later shared her astonishment with colleagues, including a minister, expressing her shock that a sitting governor had taken the initiative to clean the toilet himself.
Obi's message was clear: "When you see things that are wrong, clean them." He added that he does not keep house help and stressed that Nigerians should stop living fake lives, encouraging them to take responsibility and lead by example in their everyday actions.
### Prepared to Lead
The presidential hopeful also asserted that he is well-prepared to confront Nigeria's economic and security challenges if given the opportunity to lead the nation, underscoring that leadership by example will be a cornerstone of his approach.
