Sowore Claims Tinubu and Akpabio Are Unwell, Sparks Public Debate

Political activist Omoyele Sowore has stirred widespread reactions after alleging that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Senate President Godswill Akpabio are seriously unwell, questioning the health status of Nigeria’s current leadership.

Sowore made the claims following President Tinubu’s departure from Nigeria to Europe on Sunday. In a post shared across his social media platforms, he alleged that the President travelled abroad due to health concerns and further claimed that Senate President Akpabio is critically ill.

In his remarks, Sowore criticised Nigeria’s political leadership, accusing public officials of relying on the country as a form of “health insurance.” He wrote that while illness itself is not a crime, it is irresponsible for leaders to govern a nation while allegedly being unfit, especially when public resources are used for medical care abroad.

His comments quickly generated mixed reactions online, with supporters echoing his concerns and critics cautioning against spreading unverified claims about the health of public office holders.

Presidency Responds to Tinubu’s Trip

Earlier on Sunday, the Presidency had issued a statement explaining President Tinubu’s travel plans. According to the statement signed by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President travelled to Europe as part of his end-of-year break and would later proceed to Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates.

The statement further noted that President Tinubu was invited by UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to attend the 2026 Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW) Summit, scheduled to take place in early January. The summit is described as a global forum that brings together leaders from government, business, and civil society to advance sustainable development initiatives. The Presidency added that the President is expected to return to Nigeria after the summit.

Public Reaction Continues

Sowore’s allegations have continued to fuel debate across social media and public discourse. While some Nigerians have called for greater transparency regarding the health of elected officials, others have urged restraint and responsibility, emphasizing the need to rely on verified information rather than speculation.

As discussions persist, the controversy highlights ongoing concerns about leadership accountability, transparency, and public trust in Nigeria’s political system.
