Security Agencies Arrest 141 Suspected Cybercriminals in Coordinated Tabora and Lashibi Operation

Security agencies have arrested 141 individuals suspected of engaging in cybercrime during a coordinated early-morning operation in Tabora and Lashibi, aimed at dismantling organised networks involved in mobile money fraud and business email compromise schemes.

The intelligence-led operation was carried out by the Cyber Security Authority (CSA) in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service, National Security, and the Ghana Immigration Service headquarters. A total of 100 suspects were apprehended in Tabora, while 41 were arrested in Lashibi.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the majority of the suspects are believed to be Nigerian nationals.

During the operation, officers seized 38 laptops and 150 mobile phones, which are suspected to have been used in the commission of cyber-enabled financial crimes. Authorities also arrested a Ghanaian landlord who allegedly accommodated about 100 of the suspects on his property.

Security officials stressed that property owners have a responsibility to ensure their premises are not used to facilitate criminal activities.

The suspects are alleged to have been involved in a range of cybercrimes, including mobile money fraud, romance scams, sextortion, business email compromise, and wire fraud. Forensic analysis of the seized electronic devices is currently underway, and individuals found culpable will be prosecuted in accordance with Ghanaian law.

The Cyber Security Authority has urged the public to remain vigilant, report suspicious digital activities, and support national efforts to combat cybercrime. While reaffirming Ghana’s openness to foreigners engaged in legitimate business, the Authority warned that cybercriminal activities will be met with the full force of the law.
