The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have successfully removed Alhaji Seidu Abagre, the Mamprusi-appointed rival chief, from Bawku in the Upper East Region. This move is in accordance with the recommendations of the mediation led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, regarding the ongoing Bawku conflict.
The Ministry of the Interior confirmed the action in a brief statement on Wednesday, December 24, stating that Mr. Abagre has been escorted out of the township by the military and is currently under the care of security agencies. “Alhaji Seidu Abagre is safe in the custody of the security agencies,” the statement read.
This action follows the proposals made in the mediation report, which suggested that Mr. Abagre be recalled to Nalerigu by the Nayiri, the Overlord of Mamprugu, and reassigned to another traditional role within the Mamprugu palace. The report also stipulated that, should Mr. Abagre remain in Bawku, he must do so as a private citizen, not as a chief.
Earlier this month, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II presented the findings of the mediation, emphasizing that the legal standing on the chieftaincy dispute was clear. He referenced Supreme Court rulings that officially recognize Asigri Abugrago Azoka II as the legitimate Bawku Naba.
The mediation report was formally submitted to President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House on December 16. The Ministry of the Interior has not commented on reports of any disturbances following the chief's removal.
