Ghanaian Soldiers Remove Rival Mamprusi Chief from Bawku Following Otumfuo Mediation

Personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have successfully removed Alhaji Seidu Abagre, the rival Mamprusi chief, from Bawku Township in the Upper East Region. This action aligns with the recommendations outlined in the Otumfuo Asantehene Osei Tutu II mediation report on the long-standing Bawku conflict.

The Ministry of the Interior confirmed the move in a brief statement posted on its official Facebook page on Wednesday, December 24. According to the statement, the Ghana Armed Forces carried out the removal, ensuring that Alhaji Seidu Abagre is safe and now under the protection of security agencies.

### Background to the Removal

The removal follows the mediation efforts led by Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene, to find a lasting solution to the ongoing Bawku chieftaincy dispute. Alhaji Seidu Abagre had been recently installed as a rival chief by the Mamprusi faction, which added to the tensions in the area. The Otumfuo mediation committee recommended that Abagre be recalled to Nalerigu by the Nayiri, the Overlord of Mamprugu, to assume a different traditional role within the Nayiri Palace.

The committee proposed that, should Abagre remain in Bawku, he should no longer present himself as the Bawku Naba but instead live as an ordinary citizen of the community.

The mediation report also emphasized the legal position on the matter, affirming that the Supreme Court of Ghana had already recognized Asigri Abugrago Azoka II as the lawful Bawku Naba.

### Reports of Violence

Following Abagre’s removal, there were unconfirmed reports of sporadic gunfire in Bawku, potentially resulting in casualties. However, the Ministry of the Interior has not issued any official statement regarding these claims at the time of publication.

The final recommendations of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II were presented to President John Dramani Mahama at the Jubilee House on December 16, 2025, in an effort to bring a peaceful resolution to the Bawku conflict.

### Next Steps

The situation in Bawku remains sensitive, and the security of the region continues to be a priority. The removal of Abagre is a significant development in the broader peace efforts aimed at resolving the Bawku chieftaincy dispute, which has been ongoing for several years.
