President Mahama Sanctions Appointees for Failing to Declare Assets

President John Dramani Mahama has taken disciplinary action against appointees who failed to declare their assets by the March 31, 2025 deadline, in accordance with constitutional requirements.

Speaking at the launch of a new Code of Conduct for Government Appointees on Monday, May 5, 2025, President Mahama announced that defaulters will forfeit three months of their salary. These funds are to be donated to the Mahama Cares Ghana Medical Trust Fund. This penalty is in addition to a one-month salary donation required from all appointees to the same fund.

“For all those who were appointed or nominated before 31st March 2025 and failed to meet the deadline, you are forfeiting three months of salary to be donated to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund named after me, Mahama Cares,” the president said. “So it means that those who omitted to declare their assets by the date, you are paying four months’ salary to Mahama Cares.”

President Mahama also gave defaulting appointees until May 7, 2025, to declare their assets or consider themselves dismissed from their positions.

The directive to declare assets by March 31 was first issued on February 18, 2025. The measure aligns with Article 286 of the 1992 Constitution, whiny mandates that public officials declare their assets upon assuming office, every four years thereafter, and upon leaving office. Required declarations include information on properties, bank accounts, and financial interests.

This enforcement underscores the administration’s commitment to transparency and accountability in public office.
