VATICAN CITY – May 8, 2025
In a historic decision, the College of Cardinals has elected Robert Prevost as the new leader of the Roman Catholic Church. He will now be known as Pope Leo XIV.
Born in 1955 in Chicago, Illinois, Pope Leo XIV has a diverse academic and pastoral background. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Villanova University and later studied theology at the Catholic Theological Union of Chicago. He continued his religious education in Rome, earning a diploma in canon law from the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas.
Ordained as a priest in 1982, Prevost spent part of his career teaching canon law in Trujillo, Peru. His extensive experience in Latin America is believed to have helped ease concerns among some cardinals about selecting an American pope—traditionally avoided due to the U.S.'s global political influence.
His election marks a new chapter for the Church, with many faithful and observers watching closely to see how he will shape its future.
