Amorim Warns of Mental Fragility Ahead of Europa League Clash with Athletic Club

Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim has voiced concerns over his team’s psychological resilience ahead of their Europa League semi-final second leg against Athletic Club, despite holding a 3-0 advantage from the first leg.

Speaking ahead of the crucial fixture, Amorim urged caution, highlighting the team’s inconsistency and recent mental lapses in both domestic and European competitions. “Sometimes during a match, we’re in control—and then suddenly, we lose our minds,” he said, referencing past near-collapses against Lyon and Brentford.

He emphasized that even with a strong lead, a single goal, red card, or controversial VAR decision could shift the momentum. “We’re prepared to suffer. One mistake could change everything,” he warned.

Manchester United’s domestic form has been disappointing this season, with 16 Premier League defeats—their worst record in 35 years. Amorim admitted the contrast between their European and domestic campaigns, saying, “We could go down as the worst Premier League team to ever win a European title. That’s the reality of this season.”

With Champions League qualification on the line, the Europa League remains United’s final opportunity for redemption.
