Dr. Arthur Kobina Kennedy, a senior figure within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is calling for urgent reforms to restore internal democracy and accountability in the party. In a recent open letter titled "Democratic Accountability," Dr. Kennedy expressed deep concerns about the party's current direction, warning that continued neglect of grassroots involvement and transparency could damage the NPP’s credibility and democratic foundations.
He specifically criticized the party leadership for planning to select a presidential candidate while their own mandates remain expired.
“The party leadership, whose mandate has expired, has decided to choose a flagbearer before renewing its own mandate,” he stated.
“This is a disgraceful attempt to sidestep accountability.”
Dr. Kennedy also took aim at what he sees as a growing intolerance toward dissent within the party, comparing the suppression of criticism to issuing a “fatwa” against opposing voices.
“The NPP suddenly issued a fatwa against criticism of the party,” he wrote.
“In a democratic party, voices from the base should be encouraged—not silenced.”
He emphasized the importance of returning to the NPP's founding values—transparency, inclusion, and internal democracy—arguing that these principles are vital if the party is to remain a legitimate and effective political force in Ghana.
Dr. Kennedy's comments come amid increasing calls from both within and outside the NPP for structural reforms as the country approaches the 2026 general elections.
