A heartbreaking incident has claimed the life of a recently married man who was fatally struck by a stray bullet during a violent clash between Nigerian security forces and suspected Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) terrorists in Shikarkir village, located in Chibok Local Government Area, Borno State.
The attack occurred around 5:20 p.m. on Monday, June 23, 2025, when armed insurgents launched an assault on the village. In response, troops from Operation Hadin Kai, supported by local vigilante groups and community hunters, engaged the terrorists in a fierce gun battle, ultimately forcing them to retreat with several casualties.
Amid the chaos, four civilians were hit by stray bullets. Two of them—Ishaku Markson, 30, who had tied the knot just three months prior, and Buba Zakariya, 28—died from their injuries at the General Hospital in Chibok.
The other victims, Yama Wadai, 41, and Maina Fali, were also wounded during the crossfire. Hospital officials have confirmed that both are currently receiving treatment and are in stable condition.
The tragic event underscores the ongoing security crisis in northeastern Nigeria, where insurgency-related violence continues to put innocent civilian lives at risk—often during otherwise ordinary moments, such as a walk home or, in this case, the early months of married life.
Authorities and humanitarian agencies continue to emphasize the need for enhanced security measures and support for victims in conflict-affect.
