Four Chinese Nationals Arrested for Illegal Mining Near Subin River; Excavators and Firearms Confiscated

Four Chinese nationals have been arrested for allegedly engaging in illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, in the Adansi Asokwa District of Ghana’s Ashanti Region.

According to a statement from the Ashanti South Regional Police Command released on Saturday, June 29, 2025, the arrests were made following an intelligence-led operation carried out in partnership with the CEO of the Minerals Development Fund, Dr. Hanna Bisiw, and her team.

The suspects—Li Quan, 44; Lu Jianzheng, 36; Li Xuyu, 47; and Su Shanxing, 63—were apprehended at an unauthorized mining site in Atatam, a location situated along the Subin and Jimi Rivers. These rivers are key sources of drinking water for surrounding communities.

During the raid, law enforcement officials seized seven excavators and three pump-action firearms believed to belong to the suspects. The equipment and weapons are now in secure police custody.

The four individuals are currently being held and assisting police with further investigations.

This operation forms part of the government’s ongoing campaign to eliminate illegal mining, which has been a major cause of environmental degradation in Ghana. The uncontrolled mining has led to the pollution and siltation of water bodies and the destruction of farmlands.

In recent years, the Subin River has shown worsening levels of contamination, largely due to illegal mining operations in its vicinity.

A video circulating on social media appears to show Dr. Bisiw, flanked by armed officers, leading a team through a forested area with four Chinese nationals in tow—believed to be footage from the recent arrest. The video has generated widespread public attention and renewed calls for strict enforcement of anti-galamsey laws.

The arrest highlights continued efforts by law enforcement and government authorities to safeguard Ghana’s natural resources and crack down on illegal mining operations.

Ken Ofori-Atta Files Legal Action Against Special Prosecutor Over 'Wanted Person' Label

Former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has taken legal action against the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), seeking an injunction to prevent the agency from continuing to label him as a “wanted person” or “fugitive from justice.” This legal move comes after Ofori-Atta's image and personal details were publicly displayed on the OSP's official social media pages, despite earlier assurances made in a letter dated February 18, 2025. In a motion filed by his legal team, Ofori-Atta argues that the OSP's actions violate the principles of administrative justice, specifically the right to a fair process and the protection of his personal dignity. Additionally, Ofori-Atta seeks an interlocutory injunction to stop the OSP from issuing any further press releases or public statements that ...
