The University of Ghana has suspended all social gatherings on campus with immediate effect due to a spike in COVID-19 cases among students and staff.
This precautionary step comes after a surge in confirmed infections was reported on Monday, June 23. In a statement released Thursday, June 26, the university’s Health Directorate confirmed both suspected and confirmed cases, prompting the reinstatement of strict health protocols.
“All staff, students, and visitors are urged to remain alert and comply fully with preventive guidelines to limit the spread of the virus,” the statement said.
In line with this directive, the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs has instructed all student bodies—including the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), Students’ Representative Council (SRC), Junior Common Rooms (JCRs), and other school or departmental associations—to put all events and activities on hold until further notice.
Professor Rosina I. Kyerematen, Dean of Student Affairs, emphasized the critical nature of the directive, stating, “These steps are essential to protect the health and safety of everyone on campus.”
University officials are calling on the entire student body and campus organizations to cooperate fully to help curb the spread of the virus.
