Eight individuals have been arrested in connection with a series of violent incidents at Nkwanta Senior High School (SHS) in the Oti Region, which have left one student dead and two others injured.
The violence erupted on the morning of Thursday, June 26, when two female day students were shot while on their way to school. The attack heightened tensions in the area and prompted swift concern from both residents and local authorities.
The situation escalated further on Friday, June 27, when a male student was struck and killed by a stray bullet while seated in his classroom during mock examinations. His death has sparked outrage and grief across the community, raising serious concerns about student safety and security in the region.
In response to the escalating violence, the Ghana Education Service (GES) has ordered the immediate closure of Nkwanta SHS. The decision, according to the GES, was made to protect the lives of students and staff.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) John Nchor, the Public Affairs Officer for the Oti Regional Police Command, confirmed the arrests and assured the public that law enforcement has taken decisive steps to restore order.
“As I speak, calm has been restored in Nkwanta following recent incidents. Swift and decisive action has been taken to maintain law and order,” DSP Nchor said.
Increased police presence, including patrols and checkpoints, has been established throughout the area to prevent further disturbances and ensure public safety.
The violence has drawn attention to underlying tensions within the community, prompting local leaders to call for dialogue, reconciliation, and unity to avoid future conflict.
As investigations continue, residents remain vigilant but hopeful that peace will be restored and that students can soon return to a safe learning environment.
