A viral video circulating on social media has ignited widespread debate after a Ghanaian mother entered her son's classroom during school hours to physically discipline him for allegedly disrespecting his teachers.

Incident Sparks National Attention

The incident reportedly occurred after teachers at the school expressed frustration, claiming they could not adequately discipline the student due to the Ghana Education Service (GES) ban on corporal punishment in schools.

In the now-viral video, the mother—clearly angered—can be seen using a cane to lash her son in front of his classmates. At one point, other students are seen helping restrain the boy on a desk as the punishment continued, prompting widespread outrage and concern.

Mixed Reactions from the Public

The event has sharply divided public opinion. Some have praised the mother, arguing that she acted out of responsibility and a desire to enforce discipline in the absence of effective support from the education system.

Others, however, have condemned the act, calling it humiliating, excessive, and a violation of the child’s rights. Critics argue that such punishments may cause long-term emotional harm and advocate for non-violent, child-centered disciplinary approaches aligned with modern educational and psychological standards.

GES Yet to Comment

As of this report, the Ghana Education Service has not released an official statement on the matter. Nonetheless, the incident has reignited broader discussions about the difficulties teachers face in maintaining discipline under the current ban on corporal punishment.

It also raises important questions about how to balance parental responsibility, educational discipline, and children’s rights in a rapidly evolving educational environment.
