A Nigerian national, Ifeoluwa Akinwunmi, has been arrested by India’s Central Crime Branch (CCB) for allegedly trafficking drugs. The 25-year-old, who claimed to be a hairstylist and nail artist, was detained on June 10 in Tarahunase village, located along Rajanukunte Main Road in Bengaluru.
Authorities seized 5.325 kilograms of MDMA crystals from her possession during the arrest. She was reportedly on her way to deliver the package to a network of African drug peddlers when officers intercepted her based on a tip-off.
Alleged Drug Courier
Police believe Akinwunmi was acting as a drug courier. She had reportedly just arrived from Delhi carrying a suspicious bag. Upon inspection, officers found the drugs concealed alongside several pieces of traditional Indian clothing (churidars).
“She was waiting to hand over the bag, but the recipients never showed up,” a police source stated. “We noticed four men on scooters nearby, but they didn’t make the exchange. She was arrested while standing with the bag.”
Claims of Innocence
During questioning, Akinwunmi—who also goes by the name Princess—claimed she was unaware of the contents of the bag. She told investigators that a friend in Delhi had asked her to deliver the package to a man wearing a black hat. She also said she intended to start a salon business in Bengaluru and described herself as the daughter of a Nigerian government official, though she withheld further personal information.
Visa Violation and Ongoing Probe
Authorities revealed that Akinwunmi originally entered India in October 2021 on a business visa but later switched to a student visa to study in Telangana. However, she never enrolled in any institution and has been overstaying illegally since 2022.
“There are leads pointing to her boyfriend in Delhi, who is currently absconding,” police said. “This is her first recorded offense in Bengaluru. We are working to determine if she is involved in other cases across the country.”
Akinwunmi has been handed over to the Chikkajala Police Station, where she remains in custody as the investigation continues.
