Vincent Ekow Assafuah, Member of Parliament for Old Tafo in Ghana’s Ashanti Region, has officially called on former President John Dramani Mahama to denounce a viral video showing two foreign men—believed to be a gay couple—kissing and celebrating what appears to be a wedding ceremony at Accra’s Independence Square.
The footage, which has spread rapidly on social media, shows the couple embracing in front of the Ghanaian national flag—a scene that has triggered widespread public outrage. Many Ghanaians view the act as disrespectful to national symbols and contrary to cultural and moral norms.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, June 26, Assafuah described the event as more than just a social issue. “This is not just a social issue; it is a moral assault and a spiritual insult to the conscience of our nation,” he wrote. He further called on Mahama to take a firm public stance and urged Parliament to accelerate the passage of the anti-LGBTQ+ bill currently under consideration.
Assafuah contended that the proposed legislation is vital for preserving Ghana’s moral integrity and protecting the sanctity of national symbols.
Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, MP for Assin South and a member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, also weighed in. Through social media, he criticized Mahama and the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), accusing them of fostering an environment that permits such acts.
The video has reignited national debate around LGBTQ+ rights in Ghana at a time when Parliament is reviewing a controversial bill that would criminalize LGBTQ+ identities and advocacy. The bill remains pending.
This incident underscores the deep cultural and religious divides surrounding LGBTQ+ issues in Ghana, where the topic continues to provoke heated public discourse.
