The Ghana Drunkards Association has issued a three-week ultimatum to the government, demanding a significant reduction in the prices of alcoholic beverages nationwide.

In a recent statement, the Association highlighted that despite the Ghanaian cedi appreciating against the U.S. dollar and other major currencies, alcohol prices have remained unjustifiably high. They argue that this has placed an unnecessary financial strain on their members and the average Ghanaian consumer.

With a membership reportedly exceeding 16.65 million people across the country, the Association’s spokesperson warned that failure to respond to their demands within three weeks will lead to a large-scale protest.

“There is no valid reason for alcohol prices to stay elevated when the cedi is performing well. If no adjustment is made within three weeks, we will have no option but to mobilize a massive demonstration to demand fair pricing,” the spokesperson said.

This ultimatum arrives amid ongoing public discussions about inflation, the cost of living, and the effects of foreign exchange rates on the prices of goods and services. The Association insists that alcohol, much like essential commodities such as fuel and food, should be affordable to many Ghanaians.

The government has yet to make an official statement regarding this demand. Meanwhile, the ultimatum has sparked varied reactions on social media, with some expressing skepticism about the Association’s claims, and others humorously calling for a national dialogue on the cost of “happy hour.”
