Veteran Ghanaian filmmaker and CEO of Miracle Films, Samuel Nyamekye, has strongly refuted claims by industry personality Samdakus, who recently stated that he coined the name “Kumawood,” a label associated with the local film industry based in Kumasi.
Appearing on Seancity TV, Samdakus confidently asserted that he was the original creator of the term “Kumawood.” However, in a follow-up interview on the same platform with blogger Busumuru Sean Kingston and media personality Obaapa Ruthy Mummie, Samuel Nyamekye categorically rejected the claim, describing it as false and misleading.
“Samdakus did not create the name ‘Kumawood’—I did,” Nyamekye declared. “In 2008, during the funeral of the late actor Kwame Owusu Ansah in Accra, Kumasi-based filmmakers were clearly sidelined. Out of frustration, I said, ‘We the Kumawood people are leaving!’ That was the first time the name was used.”
Nyamekye acknowledged that while Samdakus played a significant role in promoting the brand—especially through the establishment of the Kumawood Awards—he cannot be credited with originating the term.
“There's a difference between creating something and popularizing it,” he emphasized. “I am the one who gave birth to Kumawood; others merely helped nurture and grow it.”
He concluded with a pointed warning: “No one should ever claim they created Kumawood. The industry knows the truth—I am the father of Kumawood. Let’s be honest about history.”
The debate surrounding the origins of “Kumawood” continues to stir strong opinions within the Ghanaian entertainment community. Whether it was born out of frustration or through structured branding, the name has since become synonymous with a rich and vibrant local film culture.
