Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has advised the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to prioritize competence and problem-solving skills over identity politics in selecting its 2028 presidential candidate.
Speaking on Wednesday, June 25, at the launch of the Patriotic Institute—NPP’s new policy think tank—Kufuor stressed the importance of choosing leaders based on merit, not tribal, religious, or gender affiliations.
“In a democracy, we focus on individuals, not where they come from or what group they belong to,” he said. “Our party must rise above identity-based politics and focus on capable leadership.”
His comments follow the party’s recent announcement that its flagbearer primaries will be held on January 31, 2026—a move that has already stirred early competition within the party.
Kufuor cautioned that internal divisions driven by identity politics could harm the NPP’s unity and public image. He urged members to back a candidate who can unite the party, appeal to a national electorate, and effectively address Ghana’s critical challenges.
“If we promote tribal rhetoric ourselves, then we’re the ones keeping it alive,” he warned.
He concluded by calling for unity, forward-thinking, and a renewed commitment to leadership grounded in results rather than rhetoric.
As the NPP gears up for a crucial phase in its political journey, Kufuor’s message stands as a reminder to choose vision and competence over factionalism.
