Santa Monica Police Officer Ambushed During Suspect Pursuit at Popular Mall

Santa Monica, CA – A police officer was ambushed and shot on June 25 while attempting to detain a suspect linked to an earlier shooting involving a Waymo autonomous vehicle, according to the Santa Monica Police Department.

The incident occurred around 1:00 p.m. PT near 2nd Street and Colorado Avenue, close to Santa Monica Place, a major shopping center in the Third Street Promenade district. Authorities say the officer approached the suspect believed to be involved in a June 22 shooting that injured two teenagers. That earlier incident took place at 2nd Street and Broadway.

“As the officer attempted to detain him, the suspect fled on foot,” police said in a statement. “During a brief pursuit, the suspect ambushed the officer and fired multiple rounds, striking him before fleeing the area.”

The officer, whose name has not been released, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is currently in stable condition.

At approximately 4:20 p.m. PT, police arrested the suspect in nearby Palisades Park, thanks to a timely tip from a local resident. Authorities later confirmed via a post on X (formerly Twitter) that the individual taken into custody is the same person wanted in connection with the June 22 Waymo shooting.

The investigation is ongoing, and no further details have been released regarding charges or the suspect's identity.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

Ken Ofori-Atta Files Legal Action Against Special Prosecutor Over 'Wanted Person' Label

Former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, has taken legal action against the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), seeking an injunction to prevent the agency from continuing to label him as a “wanted person” or “fugitive from justice.” This legal move comes after Ofori-Atta's image and personal details were publicly displayed on the OSP's official social media pages, despite earlier assurances made in a letter dated February 18, 2025. In a motion filed by his legal team, Ofori-Atta argues that the OSP's actions violate the principles of administrative justice, specifically the right to a fair process and the protection of his personal dignity. Additionally, Ofori-Atta seeks an interlocutory injunction to stop the OSP from issuing any further press releases or public statements that ...
