A school proprietor in the Ashanti Region has been arrested for allegedly detaining two students during the 2025 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) over unpaid school fees.
The incident occurred at The Big Six Educational Complex in Meduma, Kwabre East Municipality. The proprietor, identified as Afoakwa Sarpong, reportedly locked the students in a separate room at the exam centre, preventing them from taking the mathematics paper. They were allegedly released only after the exam had ended. Reports also indicate that Sarpong physically assaulted the students during the ordeal.
Sarpong was arrested on Monday, June 17, 2025, around 2:00 p.m., following a joint intervention by the Municipal Director of Education, Nana Adu Mensah Asare, and the Education Directorate's Public Relations Officer, Ms. Mavis Okyere Anane. He was handed over to the Mamponteng District Police Command shortly after.
The police have confirmed that a formal investigation is underway, and Sarpong is facing charges of assault and unlawful imprisonment.
The case has sparked widespread condemnation from the public and key education stakeholders, including several Members of Parliament. Authorities have promised a thorough legal process to ensure accountability and justice.
