The Ghana Education Service (GES) has ordered the immediate closure of Nkwanta Senior High School in the Oti Region following the tragic shooting of a male student during a mock examination.
The incident, which occurred on Friday, June 27, 2025, is believed to be linked to ongoing tribal conflicts in the area. According to reports, the student was hit by a stray bullet while seated in his classroom, resulting in his untimely death.
This fatality follows a similar incident a day earlier, where two female students were injured by gunfire while on their way to school. These escalating acts of violence have created widespread fear among students, staff, and the surrounding community.
In a memo confirming the closure, the Acting Regional Director of Education cited the deteriorating security situation and emphasized the need to protect the lives of both students and staff.
Security agencies and education authorities are currently working to assess the situation and ensure the safety of all affected. Further investigations are underway to determine the source of the gunfire and bring those responsible to justice.
