Ghana to Transition to West African WASSCE in 2026 – GES

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has announced that Ghana will transition to the international West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) starting in May/June 2026. This shift means that Ghana will no longer administer its own national version of the WASSCE, but will join other West African countries in taking the unified examination.

In a statement issued on Monday, December 1, Daniel Fenyí, the Head of Public Relations for GES, reminded students, parents, and schools of the need for enhanced preparation as the new system approaches.

"As Ghana moves from the Ghana-only WASSCE to the international WASSCE, written by all West African member countries in May/June 2026, GES management urges students to prepare thoroughly for the examination," Fenyí stated.

GES also reassured the public that it remains committed to upholding the integrity of the country’s examination system. The service emphasized that there would be no relaxation of the established rules or procedures for conducting exams.

“Management of GES will not compromise the integrity of examinations,” Fenyí added.

In addition to the transition, GES reaffirmed its dedication to collaborating with key stakeholders, including school heads, teachers, students, parents, communities, Civil Society Organisations, and the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), to enhance the quality of education and the credibility of examinations.

The announcement follows comments made by former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei-Adutwum, who suggested that GES policies may have impacted this year’s WASSCE results. GES has since dismissed these claims and urged the public to focus on accurate and factual information regarding the conduct and outcomes of the exams.

The GES reiterated that the 2025 WASSCE results accurately reflect students’ academic performance and emphasized ongoing efforts to strengthen exam supervision, reduce malpractice, and ensure the credibility of assessments.
