Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmatí faces an extended period on the sidelines after suffering a broken leg during a training session.
The 27-year-old sustained the injury after landing awkwardly during a morning practice at Spain’s national team base in Las Rozas, Madrid, on Sunday. The squad was preparing for the second leg of the UEFA Women’s Nations League final against Germany, scheduled for 2 December at the Estadio Metropolitano.
Bonmatí had featured prominently in the first leg last Friday in Kaiserslautern, playing 77 minutes in the match that ended goalless.
According to a statement from the Royal Spanish Football Federation, medical tests confirmed that Bonmatí had “sustained a fracture of the left fibula.” She will now return to Barcelona to begin her rehabilitation.
The injury brings a disappointing close to what has otherwise been an outstanding year for the midfielder. Bonmatí became the first player to win the Women’s Ballon d’Or three times, completed a domestic treble with Barcelona, and reached the Euro 2025 final with Spain. She was also named UEFA Women’s Champions League Player of the Season.
