Parliament is facing a major operational crisis due to delays in the release of funds, severely affecting the functioning of its various committees. Lawmakers from both the Majority and Minority sides have described the situation as unsustainable and threatening to the legislature’s core responsibilities.
During proceedings on Friday, June 7, Dominic Nitiwul, Member of Parliament for Bimbilla and Chair of the Assurances Committee, strongly criticized the Ministry of Finance for its failure to disburse committee funds.
“Parliament is now literally begging for money to enable committees to function,” Nitiwul stated. “As a committee chair, I was unable to access any funds. We had a scheduled workshop, but not a single cedi was released. This is a widespread issue—every committee is aware that there are no funds available.”
He further called on Parliament to collectively demand action from the Finance Minister, emphasizing that the funding issue goes beyond administrative delays and directly undermines Parliament’s constitutional mandate.
The Minority Caucus also weighed in, expressing concern over what they see as intentional and unjustified delays in the disbursement of funds. They rejected earlier claims suggesting that Parliament is financially stable.
“There’s a deliberate attempt to downplay the crisis,” one Minority MP stated sarcastically. “Yes, MPs have received their salaries and allowances—but that’s not the issue. The problem is the lack of operational funding for committee activities.”
The Minority emphasized that while individual MPs are being paid, Parliament as an institution is struggling. The lack of funding has led to the cancellation of workshops, postponement of meetings, and an overall disruption of oversight functions.
The continued delay in releasing funds poses a significant threat to legislative processes and the ability of Parliament to fulfill its oversight and governance responsibilities effectively.
