Ghana is currently hosting 427 Ivorian nationals who have officially sought asylum ahead of Côte d’Ivoire’s presidential election, scheduled for Saturday, October 25, 2025.
The Executive Secretary of the Ghana Refugee Board, Nana Asare Bediako, confirmed the figure during a visit to the Elubo border and refugee camps in the Nzema area. He was accompanied by officials from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
The visit followed earlier reports suggesting a larger influx of Ivorians into Ghana due to election-related tensions.
“Claims that more than 1,500 Ivorians are seeking asylum in Ghana are inaccurate. The verified number stands at 427 individuals currently registered at the Ampain refugee camp,”

He explained that the figure was based on on-site registration and interviews conducted with the asylum seekers.
Bediako also dismissed rumors that Côte d’Ivoire had closed its borders, noting that Ghana remains fully prepared to handle any emergency situation.
“Ghana has contingency plans in place to manage any potential instability. We’re also ready to ensure the safety of approximately 120,000 Ghanaians residing in Côte d’Ivoire and, if needed, carry out evacuation operations,” he added.
The delegation later visited the Ampain Refugee Camp in the Ellembelle District, where they interacted with asylum seekers and assured them of continuous support.
