Five people are feared dead, while eleven others have sustained critical injuries following a fatal accident involving a Sprinter bus and a stationary tipper truck at Atwedie, near Konongo, on the Kumasi–Accra Highway.
The crash occurred in the early hours of Saturday, October 25, 2025. According to reports, the Sprinter bus, with registration number GR 6626-22, rammed into the stationary truck while negotiating a curve.
Assembly Member for the Atwedie Electoral Area, Patrick Antwi Kakari, confirmed that firefighters were deployed to the scene to rescue passengers trapped in the mangled vehicle. The injured victims were later transported to nearby hospitals for emergency medical treatment.
Mr. Kakari disclosed that at least three other accidents had occurred on the same stretch of road earlier in the day, leading to significant traffic congestion and raising renewed concerns over safety on that section of the Kumasi–Accra Highway.
He called for urgent measures to address the recurring accidents, including improved road signage, better street lighting, and stricter enforcement of parking and traffic regulations.
Local residents have also appealed to authorities to prioritize road safety interventions, emphasizing that the Atwedie–Konongo section has become a major hotspot for fatal crashes in recent months.
