2025/2026 academic year, every student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) will be required to take a compulsory one-credit course in Artificial Intelligence (AI).
The Vice-Chancellor of KNUST, Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, announced that the initiative is part of both Ghana’s new national AI strategy and the university’s own plan to enhance digital literacy and global competitiveness among its students.
According to her, the academic board and the university’s Governing Council have already approved the course for rollout.
“Effective next academic year, every student will take a micro-credential course in AI, which will be delivered through the university’s e-learning platform. Students and staff who complete the course will be certified to make them globally competitive,” Prof. Dickson stated.
She made the announcement during the opening of the 11th KNUST Summer School held on Tuesday, October 21, 2025, under the theme “Artificial Intelligence in Education.”
Expanding Academic Innovation
The KNUST Summer School, launched in 2011 with just 250 participants, has evolved into one of the university’s flagship capacity-building programs. Prof. Dickson explained that both students and staff would be encouraged to participate in the new AI course, either in their first or subsequent years of study.
“Staff members who wish to enroll to enhance their credentials will also be permitted. Our pedagogical framework must evolve to align with emerging technologies,” she emphasized.
Harnessing AI Responsibly
Prof. Dickson highlighted the importance of adopting AI tools responsibly, stressing that ethical considerations must remain at the forefront of their use.
“We must learn to use AI tools and their related technologies, but we must also remember the ethics that guide their application. We must use them responsibly for the growth and development of our country,” she said.
She further noted that KNUST management would continue collaborating with government and other stakeholders to ensure Ghana fully benefits from advancements in artificial intelligence and digital transformation.
