Ranking Member of Parliament’s Defence and Interior Committee, Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, has strongly criticised President John Dramani Mahama for failing to appoint a substantive Minister for Defence nearly three months after the death of the late Dr. Edward Omane Boamah.
Dr. Omane Boamah, who also served as the NDC’s Director of Elections and IT, tragically lost his life alongside seven others in a helicopter crash on August 6, 2025, while travelling to Obuasi for the launch of a mining-related initiative.
In the aftermath of his death, President Mahama temporarily assigned the Minister of Finance, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, to oversee the Ministry of Defence as caretaker. However, according to Rev. Fordjour, this interim arrangement has persisted for far too long and poses serious security risks.
In a post shared on social media on Saturday, October 25, the Assin South MP described the President’s inaction as a “dangerous gamble” that could compromise Ghana’s territorial integrity amid growing insecurity.
“Nearly three months without a substantive Defence Minister is a dangerous gamble and a reckless potential compromise of our territorial integrity. What a dangerous inaction!” he wrote.
Rev. Fordjour expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in parts of the country, including Gbenyiri, Sampa, Bawku, and areas affected by illegal mining (galamsey). He revealed that over 23,000 citizens have fled to neighbouring countries as refugees due to escalating violence.
He further questioned the President’s hesitation in appointing a qualified replacement, arguing that the absence of leadership at the Defence Ministry could undermine the operational efficiency of the Ghana Armed Forces.
“No serious country runs for three months without a substantive Defence Minister. Is there no suitable person within the NDC whom President Mahama can trust to fill the worthy shoes of my departed friend, Dr. Omane Boamah?” he queried.
Rev. Fordjour therefore urged the President to act swiftly in appointing a competent and capable individual to head the Ministry of Defence.
“We demand the immediate appointment of a substantive Minister for Defence to lead the collective effort to retool the Ghana Armed Forces and safeguard the territorial integrity of our beloved nation,” he emphasised.
